Your ability to earn more and achieve success in your career will be based on three simple factors: what you do, how well you do it and the difficulty of replacing you. This blog post will be focused on discussing these three factors and giving practical tips on how to achieve success in these three areas.
1. What you do.
This is
the very foundation of your success in your career; that is your career choice.
It is important that you choose your career based on your talents. Your talents
can be seen in those things that you are really good at or can be good at, and
you find your passion, joy and derive a sense of purpose doing. Napoleon Hill once wrote that the key to success in America is for
you to “find out what you really love to do, and then find a way to make a good
living doing it”. The
truth is that you can only give your very best in the work you enjoy doing.
Being in a job that someone is ill suited for can lead to great struggle, but
being in the perfect field of work can lead to more progress, success and
fulfilment. You may want to check out how to discover your talent for

2. How well you do it.
To be
successful in your career, you must
commit to excellence; to become the best at
what you do. Brian Tracy said, “The market only pays
excellent rewards for excellent performance. It pays average rewards for
average performance, and below average rewards, under achievement, failure and
frustration for below average results”. The following tips can help you achieve excellence in your career:
·
You
must first work on your self-image and self-confidence. You might be
discomfited by the performance of the top persons in your field of career, and
may be tempted to talk down on your chances of making it to the top. But you
have to realize that no one is better or smarter than you, and that your
inability to achieve the results that the bests are achieving is because you
have not learned the skills that they have which is absolutely learnable. Your
self-talks affect your self-identity. Robin Sharma said, “Your income is a
function of your self-identity”. You may also want to check out the power of self-talk as it affects your self-identity and success.
·
Make
it a goal to develop yourself into becoming the best in your field. This
involves increasing your knowledge and skill by reading books relevant to your
career, listening to educational audios, attending seminars and workshops, talking with a mentor, watching skill-building videos and
applying what you have learned. Be willing to pay any
price, make any sacrifice to be the best at what you do
· Be consistent in increasing your earning ability by continuously working on the skill that will have the most impact in your career. Reflect on the most important skill or project that if you develop or work on flawlessly in the next four months that would become a game changer for you in your organization or marketplace, and start working on that project or developing that skill. Remember, excellence is a lifetime journey.
3. The difficulty in replacing you.
To know
how indispensable you are, you can decide to conduct an anonymous survey of
your performance. The survey is filled by your peers, subordinates or even your
boss, and the answers on the survey is summarized and given to you. I hope you
have a great relationship with those people, and you will be open to the result
of the survey.
This
factor is a more reason for you to constantly keep abreast of the recent
developments, innovations and technologies in your field. Thus, to remain
indispensable, you must be able to observe the changing trends of technologies,
developments and innovations, and be quick to adapt to those changes by
developing the requisite skills.
Also, to remain indispensable, you must learn to overdeliver on your job by providing more initiative to your organization and projects. Make sure everything you touch become better than you met it. Become so valuable that even your absent is felt. You may want to check out the beauty in work.
